Hello

The diode D4 on my Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 has burnt, the hard drive is now unable to start.

I was wondering if somebody who has got the same hard drive can send me a picture of the hard drive's bottom or the caracteristics (or reference) of the diode.
I can replace it to try to make it work again :p .

To see if you have the same as me, I took a picture of the sticker on top :

Thanks a lot !

Best regards

Nicolas

D4 is the 5V TVS (transient voltage suppression) diode. Your drive has sustained an overvoltage on the 5V supply.

You can simply remove this diode with flush cutters. The drive will work without it, but you will no longer have any overvoltage protection on the 5V supply. If, for continued protection, you wish to replace the diode, then you can use an SMAJ5.0A from Farnell, Mouser, Digikey.

I can only say : perfect !
Thank you so much !

I'll order a diode to test the drive.

I'll post the result of the repair !

Best regards

More than likely if the drive isn't working without the TVS diode, the logic on the drive is probably dead. The diode will clamp small surges, but if it's blown / burnt, the current exceeded it's clamping ability and probably took out more than just the diode.
