I was wondering which is the better card.
In the HD 5*** series review by () the HD 4870 X2 is usually faster in most games than the 5850:

It is obvious then that the HD 4870 X2 is the faster card, but the HD 5850 also has several advantages:
Direct X 11 is one of the advantages you have all thought of. However, the only game that supports Direct X 11 at this time is Dirt 2, and it has been announced that direct X 10/10.1 cards can use the main features of Direct X 11 via a driver update.
However, the HD 5850 is about £40 cheaper than the X2, uses up a lot less power, and is a lot cooler, as far as temperatures are concerned. I will also be able to run two 5850's in crossfire with my 800W (4x12V:20A) PSU, when I would need at least a 1000W PSU to run two HD 4870 X2's.

So, in your opinion, which would be the better buy?

Unless you already have an HD4870 I'd get an HD5850

the 5850

Current lcd's refresh at 60 Hz ... that means 60 fps on the screen NO MATTER HOW MANY FRAMES YOUR GFX CARD IS PUMPING OUT

the 5850 has tricks the 4870 x2 can only dream of , and it saves masses on power too

what about the 4870 1024M, I am using this one and it is pretty good to my knowledge. hmm you are wrong there on the 60hz. I have one at `120hz 6ms and one at 60hz 2 ms.

Look at the graphs I have inserted. The HD 4870 is completely dwarfed by the 4870 X2 and the 5850 as far as performance goes.

something like a mouse with a polling rate higher than 60hz will make you feel the difference at least on fps games.

on topic:

5850 no doubt. its cheaper and packs a punch than the previous dual-gpu previous gen.

Hey guys, I'm also going to buy the 5850 but I don't know which one is being represented on the above graphs, they all vary in price.

I was looking at http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174666

then came across
http://www.overclock.co.uk/product [...] 20491.html

I don't want to spend more than necessary, I just want the one thats being showed on the charts above.

Thanks

I would definatly go for the new generation 5850! Im thinking of buying the 5870 but im not sure if it's worth the extra £100.

Nvidia will be responding to the ATI release anytime soon but I know that whatever they release is going cost a arm and a leg! So im going to go ATI for the first time!
