Laptop CD upgrade ?

I am finding more often than not my cd drive will not read the disks I burn
on my other machine. Tried updating the driver, no help.

I cant find the specs on the drive.
Are they generic as to size ?
Also any recommendations, the system is a Celeron 300 with 256 M ram.
