Hi there, & Welcome to Tom's Hardware!

First of all, don't format it or you will lose all your data.

That said, we need to know more about your setup, The laptop model#, the laptop HDD make, model#, SATA or IDE, if it is from a Win-XP laptop, Vista, or Win-7 OS, and how you are connecting it to the desktop (direct connection, USB, Firewire, SATA cable). Is the Desktop running Win-7?

Also as connected to the Desktop, go to Disk Management, and in the lower graphical section, list what it says under both the Disk Status column and Volume Status column.

Should be similar to Disk 1, Basic, size, Status (online) : VolumeName, DiskLetter, size, NTFS, Status (healthy primary).

That way someone can come up with the best way to solve the problem.
