My windows xp laptop doesnt show my wireless assistance

Hello,
I have a windows xp laptop and it doesn't connect to my wireless network. I have the on'off switch to on and when I click on My Wireless Assistance, nothing happens. And when I open up my Network Connections, there are no wireless options available. Only a LAN connection from when I was in school 5 yrs ago. Every once in a while my laptop will magically detect the wireless and connect but it is a chore when I need it at a specific moment and it wont connect. Please help!!

Check Device Manger if the wifi adapter is shown there, maybe with an error state. Try uninstalling and re-installing it if it's there. Can also try a BIOS update for the motherboard.

If those don't help, you can just get an external wifi card.
