My HP is not recognizing DVD RAM

Hello, I have aCompaq nc6400 Core Duo 1.66Ghz,2GB,120GB,DVDRW,WiFi It has a DVD/ROM but it's not being recognized. How can I tell if it's broken or just not 'turned on'? Aren't DVD-ROM the same as a DVD-RW?

No, a rom will only read a dvd,but dvd-rw will read and write!
