I have a HP Laptop, my HDD has been crashed and technician advised to change the HDD, can i use an external HDD instead of an internal one, also please tell me can i install windows XP in the ext HDD and primary boot from that.

If the above is possible, any demerits?

Thanks in advance

You might get it to work, but it will be very slow.

It is a bad idea. Why don't you just replace the hard drive inside the laptop? 2.5" hard drives are not very expensive.

Bear in mind that you will need to install the drivers for the laptop hardware, no matter what hard drive you install the operating system upon.

Yes you can. Just google thumbdrive windows xp for tutorials.

Yes you can but the performance will be affected if running on a slow interface and you run into the risk of disconnection.
