guys i have a xfx 4850 and i want to use it for converting videos .

i dont use catalyst centre , i use ati tray tools .

whenever i run ati transcode converter and select a .avi file it gives me3 an error message saying "cannot use selected file"

how should i convert my files?

Do you have the AVIVO utility from ATI installed? That is the system that can transcode video files, and it certainly should accept an .avi file.

I have used AVIVO to transcode from .avi to .mpg - specifically, MPEG4. But I have an older ATI card. One of the recent issues with ATI's driver and software package has been poor performance (including complete failure) on some transcoding work when the software uses the new graphics card as the hardware for the task, rather than using the CPU. Check out reviews of recent ATI driver packages to see if that it your problem.

yes i have avivo installed but i can just select video files and watever format i put in gets rejected. even the catalyst centre is not working

I have exactly the same problem! tried at least 4 different formats including matroska and avi containers (divx and xvid) It just doesn't want to know!
