Well, it depends. What do you want to use the PC for? The 720 will mostly be better for gaming due to the L3 cache. The 630 will perform better in multi-threaded apps that can use 4 cores. The 720 will be easier to overclock since it has an unlocked multiplier.

As a practical matter, the two look so close that this may be one of those rare occasions where the possibility of unlocking a fourth usable core on the 720BE may be something to consider. I'm not sure which one I'd choose; I've got a 720BE and I'm happy with it, and put one in my wife's PC also. As much stuff as she runs though, if I were building new for her, I'd want the extra core. If you're not running a zillion programs, and plan to OC, the 720BE might be just a little better.

My first question before recomend the CPU is:

1- What do you do with the PC?...gaming, surf the web, video edition, Autocad....

Well it will depend on what your using it for. Although if your trying to get the best bang for your buck then i would go for Athlon II x4.

Yeah the Athlon is 200 MHz slower and doesn't have a L3 cache (although L3 cache not really importation). it does however has 4 unlocked cores compared to only 3 on the Phenom II x3. Which will more useful down the road when quad threaded programs are as common as dual treaded programs of today.

X3 720 BE (Black Edition) would be better for gaming and OCing. The BE means unlocked multiplier so that gives it a OCing advantage over the Athlon.

how about if OC'ing is taken out of the equation? Does the Athlon X4 630 or 620 beat the Phenom II X3 720 in terms of gaming and general usage?

The X3 is the best option that you can get, have 3 cores, but with the correct mobo and SB you can unclok the 4 core and get a X4 BE, that could be rise till 3.2GHz or 3.4GHz only with rise the multiplier.

---------------------

This depends of the game. Some games (GTA IV) benefit more of the X4 and L3 cache, and other games benefit more of the high clock speed (3.0GHz, 3.2GHz)

Why the X3 is better in this case? 'cause is a BE, with this you can unlock the 4 core and rise the multiplier and voltage for a 3.2GHz or more clock speed, with the X4 is more dificult, 'cause isn't a BE, this mean that the multiplier is locked,so, the only form to OC is with the HT reference clock, more dificult, 'cause with this you also rise the HT link and Memory frecuency.

ur saying there's a small probability (25% now )to unlock it.. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/unlock-phenom-ii,22...
an if u ever unlock it won't OC as far as the 630.
does the L3 cache matter that much?

Here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/athlon-l3-cache,241... is your reply about L3 cache memoty. A Phenom II X4 965 against Athlon II X4 620 AT THE SAME FRECUENCY (2.6GHz)

Now, in your link you can find the answer abotu BE or not BE. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/unlock-phenom-ii,22...

Big diference? maybe not. But a 630 can't beat a 720 BE in OC, and remember that the 630 don't have L3 cache, a good option for games like GTA IV and GRID.

How is the effect on the framerates on those 2 games with out the L3 cache?

Lots of links were sent in your direction, if you read the links you would know the difference with and without L3. We can not spoon feed you.

A link was sent your direction with an Athlon II 620 (no L3) against a Phenom II 965 (with L3) both clocked @ 2.6 GHz. That link alone explains the L3 factor.

Sorry bout that..

5.7% on GTA IV not much of a difference to me. What about GRID?

Uhmm, give some minutes to measure the FPS with a GTX260 and a Phenom II X4 955.

Because you're going to need a decent video card if you are going to be playing intensive games like GTA IV and Grid.

Looks nice, I just got myself a Athlon II 630 last week. Easily overclocked it to 3.5Ghz. All I had to do was bump the vcore .05V and drop the ram/memory speed down to DDR2 800 as it couldn't withstand the overclock when set to DDR2 1066.
