External Hard Drive Configeration via XBOX

I have a new WD Elements 1T HD and want to run movies / music through XBOX. XBOX does not recognize external connection via USB, so if I configure it will lose data (that's OK I can recover)Question is if I configure says system will then be able to be used as XBOX storage. Can it still be used for other means of data (movies, music etc) and be played through XBOX? thnx bg
