Upgrade optiplex 745 processor

Instead of buying a new PC for Blu-Ray playback I need to upgrade my Pentium D 2.8 processor (2 CPU's) and I've searched this forum/threads and I see the Q6600 mentioned and E6600. I don't game on it - just want CPU support for playback of HD movies on it (I already have the BD player, software, etc) and know I need to upgrade my video card. Given what I use it for (aside from surfing, Win 7, and Office programs) what is a good CPU without too much $$ since the Q6600 is @$300 and I could buy a new system for $100 more (though not w/that high of a processor but you get the idea).

what mobo do u have? chances are you won't be able to support the new processors cuz the Pentium D are old and use ancient mobos.

ok - i'm fairly computer savvy but i dont know - if there's a way to find out i'll do it. i searched my computer profile and not if this is the answer: Intel(R) Q963/Q965 Processor to I/O Controller – 2990 Manufacturer

You seem to have a Q965 chipset. I doubt Quads will work on it. Anyways, did you consider OCing the Pentium D?

From what I've read this can't be OC'd. I have the latest BIOS updates but from what little I could find OCing won't help BD playback. BIOS 2.6.3 released 11/4/09

Best you can get is an Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 1066MHz FSB Socket T with Dual Core technology XD, EM64T, 2MB and up to 4MB L2 cache, EIST and VT (E6000 series)

Hurm- since those chips have gone up in price to @$300 I might just buy a new PC for $500 that would have a better processor, graphics etc. Thank you .

^Yup. Considering DDR2 prices are the same as DDR3 and you can get a good AM3 system for $500, I'd go with a new system.

I ordered (and it's shipped) a Dell w/the AMD Phenom II X4 945 so that should bring me up to the HD "age" of PCs. Thanks again.
