Outlook express showing messages inbox but cant see them

I have just opened Outlook Express and in the folders list it's showing that I have over 1000 messages in the inbox. But on the right hand side where the messages should all be it's just empty. Please can anyone help?

It's been a while since I've used OE. There is a filter option in the settings. Be sure the filters are off so that it displays all messages. Also, if you are using IMAP instead of POP3, the filter may be set to hide deleted messages instead of purge them.
