For gaming I would recommend Socket AM3 with a Phenom 955 @ 3.2Ghz 4gigs DDR3-1333 Ram Radeon 57XX series WD or Seagate 500Gig drive Random SATA DVDRW 600W PSU with a fair case... LGA 775 socket (Core2Duo/Core2Quad) is a dead end and AM3 or new intel sockets will give you more room to upgrade in the future. Go Phenom II 955 like he said or if you want to spend more on other stuff get the Phenom II X3 720. You can look at the Athlon II X4s at $99+ for cheap quad cores.
