To each their own really but it really does depend a lot on your budget.

For gaming I would recommend Socket AM3 with a Phenom 955 @ 3.2Ghz
4gigs DDR3-1333 Ram
Radeon 57XX series
WD or Seagate 500Gig drive
Random SATA DVDRW
600W PSU with a fair case...

Others may recommend a CoreI5 and if you have a big budget a I7 920 as it will be solid for a long time.

If you budget is $500 go AMD hands down. Intel (i5 and i7) is only worth it if you have $200 or more to spend on the CPU alone.

LGA 775 socket (Core2Duo/Core2Quad) is a dead end and AM3 or new intel sockets will give you more room to upgrade in the future.

Go Phenom II 955 like he said or if you want to spend more on other stuff get the Phenom II X3 720. You can look at the Athlon II X4s at $99+ for cheap quad cores.

Here is the (in order from left to right) Phenom II X4 955, Athlon II X4 620, Phenom II X3 720 from Tom's Charts. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts [...] 610%5D=on]

The best for gaming on your budget is probably the 720.

yeah, what they said..

core i5 750 is a brilliant processor, and probably the best price/performance ratio out there.

but on a limited budget, its AMD hand down. id reocmend a 550BE processor. cheap but powerful, that should save you some GPU money.
