SATA I, II & III permutations

Are all SATA I, II & III drives both backwards and forwards compatible?
In other words, can SATA 1.5 Gb/s hard drives work with SATA 6.0 Gb/s sockets? And vice versa?

I read that generally they are compatible forwards and backwards, but are there any exceptions to this?

Yes they usually work. If it doesn't, you can apply jumper to force the sata mode (jumper settings depends on drive).

I haven't encounter any compatibility problems yet but I cannot rule out exceptions in the millions of controller and hdd combination in the market.
