HD 6990 4GB or HD 7000 series

Hi,

I am planning to get a Killer GPU for my desktop. Please find the configuration of my machine as in my signature. I am not experiencing the best graphics as of now with my 1GB AMD HD 6950. As my 1GB memory in my graphics card is bottle necking.

I now have an option to choose between HD 6990 4GB and the future cards - HD 7000 series. I believe, HD 7970 will be available in the month of Febraury-2012. But it seems, I would have to change my mother board to accommodate the new architecture in HD 7000 series (PCI-E 3.0). Any idea whether its downward compatible with my PCI-E 2.0? If yes, will I get the same performance as in PCI-E 3.0?

Any suggestion on my upgrade plan is welcomed.

Am expecting to play all new games - in 1080p with ultra max settings.

Note: I would also have to change the PSU. But I will decide on it later on..

Cheers!

Hi Arul,

Your configuration is looking Okay. But, since you are an enthusiastic user, I would suggest you to go for an upgrade to X79 chipset coupled with an i7 3960x processor and HD 7990 (which would be launched soon :)  ). If you still need more graphics, try to cross fire it.

Enjoy your new build.

Cheers!

i don't think 3960x will perform any better than 2600k when it comes to gaming

What should be our mobo/cpu if we need to upgrade to HD 7000 series or GTX 600 series?

I wouldn't choose a 6990 personally due to micro shuttering, insane heat, and noise. If I were you I'd wait for the 7000 series, it is backwards compatible with PCI 2.0. If benchmarks show performance increases with PCI 3.0 mobo's you can just upgrade to a new mobo and continue using your 2600k, upgrading to an Ivy Bridge processor down the line.

There's info coming out later today regarding the 7000 HD series, have patience, don't make a purchasing decision just yet!

Yeah wait and see what the newer 7xxx series brings. They are using new memory configuration that is supposed to brink higher bandwidth, and some architecture tweaks as well.

if you're playing at 1080p getting a 6990 GB is useless since you cant see over 60fps (i think). the best choice would be to get another 6950 GB or a 6950 GB and crossfire them.
i thaught you can max out any game on a 6950 , maybe something is wrong .

what game are you playing and how many fps are you getting.

Currently playing BF3, Splinter cell conviction... Both r lagging in ultramode.. What is min fps to see whther game is running smoth r not? Mine is 1Gb XFX 6950, always my gpu usage goin 990mb if I set to ultra.. If I put 4gb will it outperform in all games?

use msi afterburner to check the fps .

    http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=msi%20afterbu...

i think the game starts getting slow at 20fps , at 30fps it takes time for small objects to load and details to appear . you should also update your drivers to 11.9 . it could also be your connection .

    Hi Breaker,

Do we have x8 card in the market?

Cos, in our mobo document they have suggested to install single x16 or SLI x8 card. We are really confused on this.

    1) yes it will work

    2) you will definetly be able to play all current games on ultra

3)in most reviews http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6950-crossfirex... crossfire gives you about double the single card . so you should get double what you get in bf3 now .

    4) if you're going to add another 6950 later on for 3 way crossfire then get a 900+ psu . if you aren't then get 750w psu, your 600w psu might be able to run it but it might not .

will y not 4 way xfire 7970 XD they will take less power then the 6970 but u will need a new psu like 1200W something and evan today pci 3,0 mobo's wont run pci 3.0 on sli-xfire wich kinda sucks will ill go for the 7970 the price of a 580 and 25% better then it and if u boght a coustome cooler it will even OC better and if ur rich going 4 way -3 way will kill the 7990 ;)  as u can see i hate dual GPU cards XD erm the memo ram gose 50% 50% :fou:  so on the 7990 u get the same frame buffer on the 7970 so yah if u can buy 2 of those then 2 later i think it will give u better FPS but if ur mobo is 2 way then :(  mype just go with 7990 or W8 for kapler iDK y i have the bad felleing of kepler and that maxwell will be better

what ima do is get 1 7970 2 if needed and W8 for maxwell it is going to beat AMD trust me

still the 6990 scale better then the 7970 and yah 6990 will have same faith as the 5870 i think or 5970 XD any way the 5xxx dual gpu price drobed when the 6970 came so yah 7970 will drob the 6990 price i think u shuld W8 buy a 6990 when the price drobs they will cost as much as 7970 and will do better

but if u can buy a 7990 it is the best card out of those and there's no prices for now ill give it 800$ :fou:
