Fermi is also slightly smaller than GT200

Well... one thing I can say for sure is that the "Fermi" card JHH showed the other day uses a helluva lot less power than a 5870! hahahaha

Well they said it would be fast, they didn't say anything about it being cool or consume less power. :D

AMD also confirmed that Barcelona was 40% faster than Clovertown. I confirm right now that I will run for Prime Minister of Australia next week, and President of the USA in the next election after regardless of the restrictions on place of birth. I can say alot of things when I don't provide evidence.

Also, the title of this thread is incorrect. Henry said it "will be" faster, not "is faster."

Oh, and btw John, before you post another "Fermi is blah blah blah" thread get your info from a site that doesn't post contradictory articles 10 minutes after each other, and report every rumour as fact.

I found 2 examples of the type of rendering the Fermi will be faster than the HD5870 at, the same type as their launch... PAPER !!

BTW, that first one if by the guy who does Zero Punctuation reviews, and there's a moral to it that I think is applicable to the Fermi/F100/GT300 launch. ;)

Amazing, how can it be faster than a 5870 when its not even for sale?? :hello:

Hey I hear the 6870 is faster than the GT380.

It doesn't matter if it were true ATI is the star of the show while nvidia is the green troll. ATI is about to bring out its 57xx cards soon. :D

Ever hear of the old saying "Chasing the dragon" well after much thought (not really) I belive the new marketing slogan should be.

Think about it for 2 seconds, John....

A general manager would get fired if he said that an unreleased card wasn't faster than the competitor's released card. If he said Fermi was slower, HD 5870's would be sold out until Fermi finally does hit the shelves, and probably after that.

Always remember, most people have motivations other than the simple truth.

Fermi is engineered to have 3 BILLION transistors... and is a much larger chip than what AMD made. Of course it will be faster... but it'll also use more power, generate more heat, and cost more money. Fermi also seems to have the similar bandwidth bottlenecks as the AMD chips, suggesting that this will choke the card out of performing too much better than AMD, despite an obvious advantage in processing power. It'll be faster, yeah, but I think they're shooting themselves in the foot and will deliver inferior price/performance ratio.

Considering the die size, I would expect Fermi based GT300s to be priced too high for the majority of gamers to give a damn about them... a competitor to the 5850 seems ages away, IMHO... and by the time the green team has one, AMD could have better performing refreshes of the 58xx parts.

With this kind of lead... AMD'd have to basically fall asleep at the wheel to let Nvidia win any meaningful battles with GT300.

To paraphrase from a little green troll...

"So certain are you..." :non:

I look at it like this - ATi have produced something specialised, completely dedicated to pumping out pixels and fps.

Meanwhile, Nvidia have tried to produce a far more generalised processing package. As any engineer knows, compromise is inevitable with every decision. Nvidia are compromising their fps performance for FLOPS, and no, they are not the same thing.

How big is the compromise? Well, G200 got a pounding by RV770 when you consider performance per mm^2... After all the bluster about Fermi being a computer in itself... what way do you think its going to go - more toward compute? or more toward graphics?

Nvidia are shooting themselves in both feet with a double barrel. PR is dictating engineering decisions - the last company to do that were Intel with the Pentium 4 line.... Look how that turned out.

As mentioned before, the card 'most likely' will be faster.
Who will buy it? Most likely the same people who bought the $650 GTX280, which is now $239.99 ( DAMN.... I feel sorry for them.....)

yes you are right better wait while price drops and then go and buy high end card for low price...
