Didnt want to turn this into a i7-860 vs i7-920 thread because i have pretty much made up my mind. I want to run either 2 5850 or 5870 on my new rig. Will the 16x 8x be a huge bottleneck for the 5800 series cards or should I just play it safe and go with x58 with 16x 16x?

Gonna be mostly for gaming and video editing.

Just got my haf-932 in the mail the other day it is sweet!!! Just waiting to decide on the mobo then taking a trip down to microcenter.

Thanks for reading this everyone.

You'll just have to wait until the 58x0 series is released and properly benchmarked. Hopefully somebody will do a 16x vs 8x crossfire comparison on the new cards. If they perform as well as they sound like they might, you'll probably be safer going with the X58 and 16x crossfire. Of course I'm just guessing just like everybody else until the NDA is lifted.

There is no clear answer to your "Will the 16x 8x be a huge bottleneck for the 5800 series cards" question until the cards are released and properly benchmarked.

Depends on your budget, looking at your GPU sellection, it is clear that you have cash to burn cause the dual 5850's are going to cost you a hefty 600.00$ If you have enough cash for an X58 then go ahead, but don't expect to see a major performance increase unless you are waiting on the i9.

I would personally get the 860 and a nice P55 mobo and slap a nice 5870, you will have enough firepower for anything you throw at it... In most tests the 860 was smokin the 920...

My budget is pretty good and since i live close to a micro center $199 for a D0 stepping 920 is pretty sweet. I do plan on getting a i9 in about a year. The 5870 are rumored to be around $300 and i have not heard about the 5850's yet. I dont think I will save much money going the p55 route. I would like a board that can do sli and crossfire in x16x2 and the high end p55 boards are almost just as much as the x58 with the 860 being $30 more then the 920 at microcenter.

I wonder If they are gonna release a new chipset for 1366 when the i9 comes out any thoughts on that?

Thanks for the input man I apreciate it very much

Thank you uno.

yeah im just gonna have to wait :)  I know. The leaked benchmarks from CJ look down right nasty I am very excited grab one in october. And hopefully someone will have those 16x vs 8x benchmarks when the cards drop. I hate the waiting game but I would rather wait then make a rash descision being this close to release...Patience is a virtue its sad I dont have much of it...

Well according to AMD the speculated price tags on the 5XXX series are as follows :

5770 @ around 199.99
5850 @ around 279.99/299.99
5870 @ around 379.99/399.99
5870x2 @ around 599.99

The 5870 cannot be priced @ 299.99 due to the fact that it is superior than a 4870x2 (349.99)

Sweet thanks for thats a good find. I will wait to see the actual 5850 benches vs the 5870 I will pick one up when they release and then another around xmas time assuming the nvidia's dont blow them out of the water If not ill stick with the 5800 series.

Thanks again ovrclkr

No problem......

I can't wait to see those cards in action.... I bet dual 5850's would be INSANE firepower for any game....maybe a week or 2 max till release =)
