How to use laptop HD as external harddisk

Hello,
my laptop has stopped booting and it needs to be formatted completely. Before doing that I want to take backup of data present in it. I was wondering if I can use this laptop's HD as external HD with any other system and take back up. Could any one suggest me a way out?

Won't boot into safe mode so you can save your files to flash drive ?

You can hang the drive internally in another PC as a slave and copy your files, provided it uses same (2.5 or 2.5 HD), or buy an external USB HD case (cheap) to put your drive into.
