Custom neighborhood installation question

I am whiling away the weeks until nightlife arrives and I reinstall by
organizing my downloads including some that I had never installed for
various reasons. One thing that I am trying to install is Madame Min's
Pleasant Valley. Since it was labeled N001, I assumed it would replace
Pleasantview which I had been actively playing and hadn't tried it out
before. I was right that when I put it in the neighborhoods section it seems
to have wiped out Pleasantview, but nothing appears in its place. Just
putting it in seems to have worked for my own custom neighborhoods, but the
are N004 and N005. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how to
correct it?

Rename everything in the new neighborhood that starts with N001 to the next
available number (from your message it seems that would be N006) for a new
neighborhood that won't replace any you have already in your game.

You put in my N001, and nothing was there? Odd.

I'd try deleting your current N001 and then inserting it again. If that
doesn't work it's more likely that I made a mistake than you did. Although I
do not know what, as it works for me.

By the way (and I did say this at the time), you can change what
neighbourhood it is by renaming every folder and file with N001 in it to
N### (where # is the alternate neighbourhood number desired).

Neighborhood maps don't go in the neighborhood folder. That's where you
have your saved games. Instead, put them into the SC4Terrains folder.
Then, when you are ready to start another custom neighborhood, the new
template should show up as one of your choices to build in.

The files seem to be there, it just didn't appear when I launched the game.
Will try deleting again and reinstalling as well as renumbering and see if
either works. Pleasantview was getting overcrowded and messy so it won't
matter until I reinstall. I really want to see someone's nighborhood that
is not either maxis or mine. Thanks!

Isn't that just for new terrains though not neighborhoods? When I
reinstalled my own custom neighborhood I just put it in the neighborhoods
folder and it seemed to work just fine. I've never tried to put it a custom
terrain, although I have downloaded and saved a couple of them. I am fairly
clueless sometimes and don't have Sim City 4000 (still playing 2000
occasionally). New terrains don't go to downloads but to the terrain
folder? Sometimes I miss Pong....

If you are trying to install an entire neighborhood with houses and sims
and the whole bit, it won't work simply by putting the folder in the
neighborhoods folder. You also have to include the file called
NeighborhoodManager.package. You already have one in there that
includes information about the neighborhoods you have been playing, so
if you replace it with Mim's file, you will lose everything you've done
in your game. I think! At least, it worked that way for me when I
tried to replay a neighborhood I'd saved on a CD. I also saved the
NeighborhoodManager.package file and when I put that in there, it
overwrote the one I already had and none of the other neighborhoods were
the same again.

Thanks! I see what you are saying now. I did finally figure out my problem
though, it was much simpler than it should have been. I had created
subfiles in the subfiles in N001, that doesn't matter in downloads, it does
there. Oh well, at least, as my mother used to say, I don't have to worry
about premature senility any more.

So, did it work or not? It cannot be the neighbourhood manager because I
have taken a neighbourhood folder and copied it, renamed it and the files
within it and had it be available at a new number.

It did and it is a delightful neighborhood. I'm going to be playing it
instead of Pleasantview until Nightlife appears and then reinstalling it as
one of my permanent neighborhoods. Thank you so much for sharing! There
is a lot of work in that. Did you build the houses too? They are very
playable.

Thankyou. I feel so much better about those houses, which I hated building
(I hate all the houses I build). Please keep me up to date on your Ancestor
Sims Neighbourhood, because (as far as I know) you are the first person to
actually play them. It will be great for me to get the feedback on how you
think they conform to the 'real' ancestors in looks, because most of them I
had to create from scratch with the Body Builder.
