If you're planning on buying Windows 7 when it's released then why not just get Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7? It costs less that way and you'll have access to all 4GB of RAM right off the bat. You can also do an upgrade to 64-bit Windows 7 from 64-bit Vista. You'll have to do a clean install if you run XP until you get Windows 7.
If you're avoiding Vista because you "heard" it sucks then I can tell you that I have never had any incompatibility or stability issues at all with it. It's bad rap came from the initial release when drivers caused instability or people were trying to run it on systems that weren't powerful enough to run it.
You can check out some of the other 32 vs. 64 bit threads, but 32 will take (almost) full advantage of your 4gb, unless you have a vid card in there.
I have seen that people have had problems with XP 64bit, but vista and 7 have much better 64-bit versions. Is there a reason why you are only looking at XP?

If this is a new system then the answer is neither. XP is 8 years old. A 32-bit OS can't fully use 4GB of RAM. Your best option right now would be to get 64-bit Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7.
well i am getting the new windows thats coming out in October... i just want to install xp on this new build i got... till i get the new OS ..... i will just use the 32bit version then ... thanks!!
