I have a fujitsu seimans amilo 1450g (yes I know - old!). I would like to speed it up a bit to run photoshop with less twidling thumbs. I have upgraded RAM from 1 gig to 2 gig. I would like to upgrade the CPU if possible. I read somewhere that it may be possible to upgrade with other cpu's of the "Dothan" family (e.g. Pentium M 755 or 765). I see some used 755's for sale on ebay.

My question is: Is upgrading the cpu advisable, and if I do would I also need to change the fan?

I know its probably time to buy a new notebook, but I'm a bit tight-fisted and don't want to give up on a computer that is still working perfectly after 5 1/2 years!

The upgrade is a fit-in and falls within the same voltage so there's no need to change the fan... the 755 is 2.0Ghz compared to 1.6GHz on the 725... so the difference would not be spectacular but enough to clearly notice the difference, so changing it or not depends on how long you plan to keep the computer or the price you're willing to pay for it...
