Hello everybody,
I have the money to upgrade my motherboard right now, but not my processor. Currently I have an AMD Athlon X2 4600+. I plan to upgrade to a Phenom X4 which is an AM3 socket. Can I buy a motherboard that supports the Phenom but will run my current Athlon until I can afford the Phenom?

So if I get one of these motherboards my Athlon X2 4600+ will work on it? Then when I get my Phenom II X4 965 it will also work? I currently have a Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G and its starting to go out on me. I'm just trying to see if I can get a new motherboard that will support my current processor, but will also support the Phenom I'm getting a little bit later down the road.

It says it supports Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and the Phenom II 945/925. I have an Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and I'm getting a Phenom II X4 965. If I'm reading it correctly, I don't think it will. A friend told me if I get an AM2+ motherboard I can run my Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and then upgrade to my Phenom II X4 965. Is this correct?

yes basically but not all necessarilly you have to check the manufactorers cpu support list how much you going to spend and where are you going to be getting it online? maybe someone could sugest best for the money

OK, here's the short version:

AM3 CPU in AM2+ mobo with updated BIOS = no problem.
AM2/2+ CPU in AM3 mobo = NO WAY. The socket is incompatible with older CPU's.

Hanging on to your old CPU means you won't be able to buy an AM3 board, which seriously limits your upgrade options for the future.
