Buy a USB to serial converter. It is not simply a matter of wiring a
cable; custom electronics and firmware, and drivers are required to
emulate a serial port via a USB connection.

Depending on how the GPS software talks to the Earthmate device, a USB to
serial converter may or may not do the job. The Belkin version seems to
have the best success rate with PDA's so perhaps it would work for you.

Otherwise the other option is to buy a "real" serial port in a PC Card,
such as the ones from Socket Communications.

In addition to what Mike offers, be aware that in WinXP serial GPS is
often recognized as a mouse by the OS. Go to Google Groups and enter
the search: gps xp mouse for workarounds.

It's not that simple, not nearly that simple. You will need a USB to
serial adapter that works with the Delorme GPS receiver (most will, but
no way to be sure other than trying it).

Suggestion: sell the GPS on E-Bay and get one of the newer Delorme USB
GPS receivers.

Note, MOST modern laptops have no serial ports, no PS/2 mouse or
keyboard ports, and sometimes no printer port (although for now, most
still do have parallel printer ports).

Get a USB to serial adapter like the one by Belkin. USB requires a
controller so data doesn't collide, so little chance of making your
own cable.
