Is 1 GB ram and a 512 mb ram possible?

Right now I have a 512 mb ram in my computer and Im planning to buy a 1 gb ram for the remaining slot. Is it possible to have match like that or is it better to take out the 512 mb ram and just install the 1 gb ram??

Is that going to make it dual channel. Will dual channel of 512 mb be more better than 1 gb and 512 mb ram together?
