First off, I have a i7 920 C0 S-spec:SLBCH B#3836B165 (which I still hear oc's fairly well to around 4.0)
I have had it since around March which I placed the order for some pc parts but never finished the build.
The processor by the way is still in it's box new but I did break the seal on one side to look in it curiously.

My first question would be.. Does any one have a clue if the 1366 format is still being used for the "gulftown" 6cores that intel shall be putting out next year? I did infact hear this but I also can assume that new feature/mobo's will be coming out along with the gulftowns.

So, do I stay with a i7 920 build type and add up the other parts? Or drop the i7 920 and sell it and purchase a i5 with the lot for roughly around the same price I would pay alone for the mobo and ram for the i7 build? Which I might add money isn't really an issue for new parts. (But, keep in mind new products should be coming out soon enough 3.0 usb, new Sata and w/e the new graphic card types are going to be. )

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: October 4th

BUDGET RANGE: I don't really have a budget.. and I have quite a few things to begin with I guess if I do spend you could say anywhere from 700-1000 more.. :sarcastic:

SYSTEM USAGE: Gaming, surfing the web, movies (media)

PARTS NOT REQUIRED:
Case - Cooler Master HAF 932 RC- Full Tower
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] -_-Product

PSU - CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] sair%20850

HDD: Black Caviar 640GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] viar%20640

DVD/CD burner combo: Uhh.. A samsung I think but I could care less about listing that.

Thermal Paste: OCZ Freeze Extreme
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] z%20freeze

GPU: GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB EVGA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] -_-Product (Bought this card from ebay still sealed back in march.. Never bothered to check if it even works yet)

OS: Still Sealed OEM Vista Ultimate 64 bit..

WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg is nice.. frozencpu.. heatsinkfactory.. amazon.. I'm up for anything really.

PARTS PREFERENCES: Uh, I don't know.. I like ASUS & EVGA alot. I don't label things too often ( Listing more questions below. )

OVERCLOCKING: This is a definite.. I know I can reach around 4.0ghz on air for both the i7 920 I have or the i5.

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe in the future..

MONITOR RESOLUTION: Something that looks great for gaming and videos.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Okay, obviously the debate between switching to an i5 or keeping my i7 is an issue.

If I do happen to stay with the i7 920 i'm pretty much set on the Prolimatech Mega Shadow Deluxe http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/pro [...] ooler.html
paired with some Scythe F 1600 RPM's x2 for push + pull = 128CFM.

I do have in mind a fan controller but it's not out yet nor do I have the link to it unfortunate enough.

I have a gtx 260-216 but I would consider getting a different card but I also know other new cards might be coming out very soon. So if it's worthly to upgrade or just use the 260 till newer cards become available?

OEM Vista 64 bit ultimate.. Will I be able to get the upgrade discount to Windows 7? Not just the upgrade to another ultimate.. I don't know where i'm going with that.. I just know like most other people that I want 7.

Monitor: I will be gaming and using my pc for media ( thoughts on any models new models coming out or such would be great! ) I do love big screens also but quality is what it's all about in the end.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] -_-Product This is the ASUS monitor I thinking about.. price/display/size looks like a good combo.

As for sticking with the i7.. I was thinking the ASUS P6T Deluxe v2 or the ASUS Rampage II GENE or whatever you think is a good idea. links for both of the boards I mentioned:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.258293
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.258292
Both of those links are the combos with some OCZ silver plat 1600 6gb kits.

As for the i5.. I seen this combo which did look rather nice
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] ombo259309
But like I mentioned price doesn't really matter combos aren't 100% needed BUT if I do switch to the i5 I need help with picking out a different heatsink.

So I don't think I missed anything else to say.. but any help you can drop on me is great!

That is what is supposed to happen.

I dont think thats likely. There is less than a $200 price difference between an i5 and i7 Mobo/CPU/RAM combo.

Well, that would be nice with the gulftown.. I wish I had a D0 instead of a C0 though for my i7.. ;_;

Does anyone think I should sell my C0 920 and go for a D0? Or would it even be worth it? Also, Gene II mobo or ASUS P6T Deluxe V2? some more help would be nice... bump~

Most peeps exceed the design of the Prolima w/ large 100+ cfm fans. My choices,a s well as yours, are down around the design point

"The Prolimatech Mega Shadow has been designed with the quiet cooling enthusiast in mind and engineered for low to medium speed 120mm fans producing around 57 CFM."

I'm leaning to these at this point (1500 RPM, 69.15 CFM, 18 dBA....like the removable blades and $7.99 price

If the box is unopened, you might be able to return Vista, tho if you're a student, Win7 Pro can be had for about $29.

Fo MoBo, I chose the Asus Rampage II Extreme for its power regulation and just cause it looks so darn "cool" (as in temperature as well as looks )

Well, first off.. those ENERMAX MAGMA fans are sexy. They would look even more sexy on the Mega Shadow.. I already have the black and red theme going with the HAF so I wouldn't mind adding to it.

I purchased the Vista from newegg about 6 months ago.. I really doubt they would let me return it. It is however unopened but I am doubting i'll even get 100 for it if I try selling it on ebay. I just want to be able to upgrade to Windows 7 without having to shell out $200 for a new OS when I have a new 64bit Vista Ultimate that has never been used! So, that is why I have been wondering about the upgrade costs.
I'm thinking about trying to sell my C0 on ebay and paying the difference for a D0.. any thoughts on that? I do want around a 4.0-4.2ghz stable OC. Then again I don't know the exact limit my C0 will reach but I do know it should throw out more heat.

I did want a Asus Rampage II Extreme before but I feel like shelling out even more for a mobo isn't in my best interest otherwise I would go with the Classified EVGA board. I am more thinking I am going to be playing around with the i7 for a while.. atleast for a year or so untill I confirm all the data I need on the gulftown or i9's to figure out what should be happening by then. New waves of mobos should be coming out even if you can use them with the already produced 1366 boards. The new boards should be sporting all new bells and whistles.. atleast from what I think supporting USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gbit/s is for sure.

I want some thoughts on a nice monitor, keyboard and mouse also. Ohh, I was also thinking about picking up a 300gb Velociraptor, not positive it's worth the money in the long run though.

Any headsets around that people find the quality++ sound/comfort?

monitor get resolution 1920x1080

mouse - if you are a true gamer get a razer mouse

keyboard - any wireless is fine.

hard drive - get the samsung harddrive f3 instead.

go with i7 build, dont sell your c0 stepping keep it.

video card - get a hd4890 because of 1920x1080 wait a little for 5xxx cards come to price drop older cards

Why is the 1920 x 1200 not a good reso for gaming and movies? I would like some actual product links for monitors that would be suggested. IS selling my C0 and going for a D0 really that bad of an idea? Those HDD's are pretty nice, solid enough for a Raid 0 prospect? As for as razer's go I agree. Still not sure about switching to ATI cards.. period @_@ i'm an nvidia fan boy.

oops sorry, didnt know you were going for 1920 x 1200 which is better than 1920x1080

selling c0 and going for d0 theres really no point, because who u gonna sell to? d0 just overclocks a little better, no point. but if it's no additional charge then its okay.

and for video cards, you said you are a nvidia fan boy right ..but ati is dominating the market right now..price for peformance wise..and when 5xxx series come out nvidia is over.
