Advice on heatsink and fan for new build.

I am ordering everything for a new build.

My processor is going to be an AMD Phenom II 2.8 X3 on a GIGABYTE
GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard.

I already know that the stock heatsink and fan that comes with the CPU is junk, so I was looking for some suggestions.

Also, is it true that am2+ and am2 heatsinks will fit an am3 board?

Thanks!

AM2/AM2+/AM3 all have identical mounting setups. What case do you have? If the X3 comes with the same CPU cooler as the 955X4 the cooler is far from junk, its actually pretty good, most aftermarkets are better but the stock cooler will keep the quad cool so the tricore should run even cooler assuming its the same one.

hunter,

From what I've read, the X3 does not come with the same quality cooler as the 955X4.

I went ahead and ordered the XIGMATEK HDT-S963 92mm Rifle.

On a different discussion board, several people with my processor said they had good luck with it.

I just hope there is room in my mid ATX case........

Thanks for all you input though.

You should be able to fit the 92mm version with no problem, most mid downs can fit 120mm heatsinks with little issue.
