Why can't Vista laptop print on printer connected to XP Desktop?

I have a Vista 64 bit laptop hooked up to my home network. I can see the printer on it that is wired via USB to my Desktop PC running XP and my network seems to work good between the computers however when I try to print a document on the vista laptop through the network I get an error that says it can't communicate with the printer. The printer (Dell 962) does work fine when I connect it to the USB on the Laptop though.
