That's right, 7 days til the game starts hitting shelves and gamer's
hands, at least in some places. The game is supposed to be released on
the 15th, but will in fact be released to shops on the 13th, to give
them time to ship products to costumers who have pre-ordered.
I for one am giddy with excitement... although I know virtually all
there is to know about NightLife, one of the biggest suspense moments
will be finding out what the next EP is...
So here's holding my fingers crossed for a Farm/Pet/Produce EP! A
business EP also would be most welcome...

I got told the 19th yesterday by our software supplier and that SA was low
on the list and may even be a couple of days later - does this mean we're
back to uneven release dates? Grah!

I don't think so, it says 15th for both norway, sweden, denmark,
finland and britain as well. Maybe Aussies get it later because it's
shipped from another country? However, the game will already be
available in some places by the 13th.

By the way, why is Sims 2 rated 13+ in the US and 7+ everywhere else?
Well except China, where it's banned.

16th in the UK. My basic knowledge of video games release dates says
games are released in the US on a Tuesday and in the UK on a Friday.
Don't ask me why it just is!

For the same reason GTA "hot coffee" caused such a stir in the US with
the EU shrugged and thought so what? Its just badly drawn computer
chars at it. In other words the EU is much more relaxed.

and because you can pick up a newspaper or mag and see way more. (And I
don't mean "those" mags. Normal mags like FMV and Vogue are mroe
relaxed then the the US versions). You can get away with stuff on TV
here that would never wash in the US. And on the main land Europe even
the ads can rude and as for the TV programmes.......

I dunno, actually. The ESRB says
"Crude Humor,Sexual Themes,Violence"
But doesn't say which specific things in the game.
While you would think it would be the woohoo, the original Sims had the T13+
rating for:
"Comic Mischief,Mature Sexual Themes,Mild Animated Violence "
Yet, in the original game, there was no "woohooing". That was added in the
first expansion (because it was heavily requested).
My guess is, it's actually the groping while kissing, not the woohooing,
that gets the rating.
Though it could be the nudity. The description for it says
" Sexual Themes - Mild to moderate sexual references and/or depictions. May
include partial nudity "
I guess since nothing is actually shown, that qualifies as partial.

Even a muslim woman in a burkha is partially nude... her eyes and
hands show :-) Pretty silly of ESRB, that they cannot make
distinctions between wargames and the occasional slap or dustcloud
fight that takes place in the Sims.
As for the sexual part, I guess it's ok to show people how to kill
eachother, but not to make babies, or even the acts that lead up to
the babymaking. Absurd. I'm glad we don't follow ESRB's
recommendations elsewhere. We have our own agency here that looks at
the game as a whole.
As for kissing and groping... I see that every time I leave my house.
I wonder when the thought police will come and make it illegal for
people to kiss eachother in public. Before you know it we'll be like
Iran.

Yeah, I have to say, I don't think many 7 year olds can afford to buy
the game anyway, so they might as well put no age lol because it's
parents who end up buying it. But I think the ESRB rating guides
parents to false expectations. They come here and think that the game
is sexual and violent, because it has a teen rating.

It is also, in the US, something of a marketing technique. The bulk of game
buyers are, I am assuming, still teenage and young adult males who would
assume that something without at least that minimum rating as too childish
to be interesting.

Either that or AFA Interactive is screwing us around again. I keep telling
my boss that we need a new supplier, but he must know something I don't as
he stays with them even though they lose orders and ship late regularly.

It's not called, "The magic 18 rating" in the UK for nothing! (18 being
the UK equalivant of M. There isn't really an AO here)
I must admit I do look at horror films and say, "15 rating! How scary
can it really be?" Mind you The Ring was a 15 here and that's a decent
flick.

I allow my 4yo to play Sims 2...with the blur turned *off*. We walk around
our house naked after baths and in the morning, why shouldn't Sims? She
hasn't even asked about it. Maybe she's used to a family of nudies?
She *loves* this game. Of course she pretty much has me setup pink houses
with purple walls and fill them with "Princess" families. I use hacks to
make sure her Sims don't die and let her play. She enjoys dressing them and
making them go swimming, etc. No different than playing with dolls, really.
And heck, most of her Barbies are naked too, perhaps we should put a warning
on them?

No idea what the name of it is, but they set a "prefered" limit,
wether the shops actually follow them or not is as I understand it
completely up to them. I think it's the EU regulations.

Unfortunately, it's PEGI (www.pegi.info) where religious groups have
been largely involved. It doesn't have anything to do with the EU and
the ratings are only recommendations (at least they are in Norway).
