Gaming: Upgrade SLi Videocards or CPU/Mobo/RAM?

I am wondering if I should upgrade my current system with:

X58 Mobo/ i7-920/Memory (~$500)

or

2x SLi GTX 260 (~$350)

Which one will give me more performance for gaming (I play at 1680x1050)?

More about gaming upgrade videocards mobo
  1. get a cooler an oc your q6600 to round 3ghz and get a gtx 275
  2. +1 ^
  3. Two things:

#1, if your CPU isn't OC'd right now, then OC it as said above ^

#2, wait a few days for the new ATI 5xxx series to come out and then decide on a video card.

In regards to #2, you don't need SLI to play at your resolution so either a 275, 285 or ATI 4890 would work. Or of course one of the new cards.

Honestly you'll probably benefit the most from a CPU OC if it already isn't. If it is, and you simply want more eye candy (cranked settings + AA), then video card is going to be it.

    Ugh, a B3 Q6600 and a 680i based motherboard.
Sorry, I doubt you will be able to get your CPU past 2.8Ghz.

I would skip upgrading anything at the moment.
If you can get a bit of an overclock out of the CPU great!
If not, it is still pretty powerful as it is.

Your current 8800GT SLI is roughly as powerful as a GTX 280.
Especially considering your resolution, upgrading your graphic card(s) would make no sense.

Better would be to upgrade to a nice 24" display and save for an ATI 5 series card.

You are right, my Q6600 B3 does not OC well. And yes, I am running the CPU at stock speed.
