I was wanting to get a video card for my computer that has hdmi to hook up to my 720p tv. And was trying to find out what I need to look for in a video card to carry both video and audio
Look for cards that have an S/PDIF input. These cards will come with the loop cable that is necessary. Also, your motherboard has to have an S/PDIF connector also.

My HTPC has an ATI 4670 with HDMI to my 720p TV. And yes, it carries the audio through just fine. I'm very happy with the card, for the limited job it does. No gaming, jsut movies, hulu, websurfing, and google maps.
Any of the ATI cards that specifically say "HDMI" on the box will support audio through the HDMI cable. I don't know about the Nvidia cards, but I don't believe they pipe audio through. I tried searching for HDMI audio drivers and never found any.

So what I've been able to find is that the HDMI through Nvidia supports audio through the card. You just need a sound card that pipes S/PDIF to it. ATI actually has sound drivers in the video card itself.
So if you have a high quality Sound Blaster Platinum, you'd want to go with Nvidia to pipe the sound through the HDMI channel. But if just have onboard audio, the ATI sound drivers support 7.1 audio and it'd be a step up to just have ATI sound.

NVIDIA: You have to connect the card to an audio source (sound card/motherboard) using a 2-pin SPDIF header. You get all sound formats the SPDIF can carry (2.0 PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS)
ATI: A sound chip is installed on the card. You get all uncompressed sound formats (2.0, 5.1, and 7.1 PCM)
