  1. Do you already have the P4? I would really suggest something like an Athlon II 245 if you dont already have the P4. If its a socket 775 P4 you should be able to get a cheap board that supports it off newegg along with some DDR2 ram, get a Gxx board so you dont have to get a GPU too. If you dont already have the p4 its going to be harder to get.
  2. Building around that old CPU is a big mistake since you can build a MUCH faster computer for just a few dollars more.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.254104 (AMD Athlon II X2 240 + Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H combo) $119.99

    WINTEC AMPX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 3AXT6400C5-4096K - Retail $49.99 - $10 MIR

    SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM $49.99

    Total - $219.97 - $10 MIR

You could go with a cheaper hard drive to get to your budget, but the newer drives are considerably faster and not much more money.
  3. ^+1. Let the P4 die. The X2 240 is leagues ahead of the P4/Pentium D.
  4. The only good place for a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 is the garbage can.
  5. Why oh Why new build with p4, if you must get some cheap second hand parts from ebay, bet you will come in under $100 this way!
  6. you can easily purchase a refurb p4 system under $200
  7. > Internet / Word Processing

    If that's all, then ...

    Intel Celeron 430 Conroe-L: $40

    Subtotal: $157.00 (excluding shipping)

    ALL BRAND NEW HARDWARE!!

That leaves you $43.00 to play with :)

p.s. The Celeron 430 is plenty of power:
don't be deceived by the name, which was
    re-branded for Conroe single-core CPUs
and later for a few dual-core CPUs too.

Search for "Celeron" at Newegg for a list:

  8. damn you just made me s**t in my pants, ARE YOU SERIOUS? A P4 BUILD IN THE YEAR 2009? EVEN FOR 200 DOLLARS, YOU CAN GET A BETTER COMPUTER (SOMEONE POSTED A BUILD ABOVE).

this thread is just pointless, i give that p4 a throw to the garbage where it belongs :D just an opinion

    Or as a heater
  10. Alright, so I was going to make her a dirty Pentium 4 system, but you guys talked me out of it to say the least. So I have a case, Power supply, and all the case mods for it. Now for the actual system, lolz... I want to keep this PC as cheap as I can but still get decent hardware. All this PC will most likely be used for is facebook, net surfing, and a few papers for college. As I said, my budget is around $200, buuut, if any of you can find some good ways to budget it less, props.

    Any thoughts?
