Hi :)

 

I need a very powerfull video card, because i work with 3D moddeling, etc. I think i am goin to buy a Nvidia Quaddro card. It is a good card right? I also wondered if the card is good for gaming?

Yeah, without going into detail, the simple answer is NO. It is not good. It "may" get you by depending on the game.....but that's about it.

I am currently using a Quadro FX1700 (worth about $400). It has the gaming equivalent of a 9800 GT. These cards were not meant for gaming, but will work well for 3d modeling.

Don't expect as much gaming power out of a workstation card.

I would go with a "gaming" video card instead of a workstation card.
Why? Because workstation cards are overpriced for the amount of performance they hold. A "gaming" card, i.e. GTX 275 would most likely be more powerful in every applications compared to the Quadro and cheaper.
Refer to the charts to compare them.
I feel that you pay a premium for Quadro cards over regular cards.
You may also find better cooling solutions bundled with the "regular" cards.

For all applications a GTX 275 has more than enough power to run 3D modeling and games.

Workstation cards are basically the same as gaming cards hardware wise. The only difference is in the drivers, where the workstation cards have drivers designed to have them run and a steady pace and high quality. Gaming drivers are more 'run as fast as you can when you can, but then you have to run slower at times too.' Gaming cards tend to do better in 3D modeling than workstation cards do in gaming. So like akorzan said, a gaming card would be a better choice.

Get yourself an overclocked from the factorty GTX 275. Of course if you want to go crazy you can get a GTX 295 but that might be more than you need. heh, what am i say, its never more than you need! :-)

How serious of 3-D modeling are you talking about? What do you currently use to do it? Gaming cards will do ok for low/med complexity projects, but the large/insane models need the workstation cards. For equivalent hardware, the workstation card will destroy the gaming equivalent. However, if you don't need a ton of power for modeling but want to play the newest games, get a gaming card instead. What program(s) are you using?

Gaming cards can do workstation stuff, just much slower. So if you do this stuff for real, they are worth the price premium.
