Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to OC'ing and have decided to OC my i7 920 on an ASUS P6T. I have 6GB Corsair XMS3 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 ram and a CM Hyper 212+.

I was just wondering your opinions on whether to OC using 190MHz x 20 or 200MHz x 19.

Using 190MHz x 20:

My max temps with IntelBurnTest is 68 'C and RAM is set to 1520MHz with 7-7-6-21 timings. I did not have to raise any of my voltages (Vcore or QPI/DRAM) which are set to 1.20V for both.

Using 200MHz x 19

My max temps with IntelBurnTest is 78 'C and RAM is set to 1600MHz with 8-8-8-24 timings. Voltages needed to be increased a lot. Vcore to 1.25V and QPI/Dram to 1.25V.

Is the extra 10 degrees worth it just to use my RAM at 1600MHz speed? Will the speed difference be significant for gaming purposes?

The speed difference will not be significant.

At the slower memory speed, the memory has slightly quicker timings. That will pretty much even out the performance of faster memory speeds and slower timings. Because performance is very similar, I would use the settings that gave me the lower temps.

I have my 920 set to 180 MHz x 21 with turbo boost enabled (3.78 GHz), threading disabled, no change to the Vcore or any voltage at all. I run my machine at about 44 'C while playing games and about 63 'C - 67'C stress testing with Prime95.

I also have a CM Hyper 212+, I live in Ireland though (it's cold), have a fairly massive Antec 900 case with 9 fans on the case and CPU combined.

Okay, thanks all. I feel that I can sleep better at night with the setting that gets me lower temps lol. If there's no big difference in speed I'll just go for the lower bclk and tighter timings.
