I7 with 3 or 6 sticks of RAM?

I remember reading a while ago that the i7 was designed to work best with 3 sticks of ram, but on my upcoming desktop workstation I'm going to need a lot of ram and as fast as possible (1600MHz I believe is what I want)
I'm planning on 12g. Would there be a significant performance gain running 3x4g sticks over 6x2g sticks?

It's not three sticks specifically that optimizes performance, but rather multiples of three - so six sticks is a great choice.
