Tomorrow I will be putting together my first build. I have a crucial m4 64 gb ssd as a boot drive and a samsung f3 1tb hdd for data. I will be installing win 7 home premium 64 bit oem. Is there anything I should do before loading on the operating system. The crucial site didn't seem very helpful. I remember people saying that an ssd should be set to ahci mode. Should I do this and if so will it affect the hdd or my dvd burner?

Solution
Install the ssd in your pc case and connect it to the motherboard. Do not connect your hard disk drive just yet. Boot your pc and go into the BIOS. Make sure BIOS is set to AHCI mode and the ssd is the boot drive. Save the configuration and exit. When the boot sequence is finished go ahead and Install Windows.

There are some space saving tweaks and few other things that can be done once Windows is installed. Here is a link to a recent article written by tecmo that discusses the tweaks:

I recommend only doing the space saving tweaks. The article points out that most of the other tweaks are of questionable value.
