Opening .dbx files saved from OE

I managed to save a whole load of emails which I may have to refer to in future using advice from Freebits. However, I am not able to open them - the message said I needed to associate them and I chose Open with ...MS Word. Now I just get a load of hieroglyphics. I feel totally out of my depth. Fortunately the original emails are still in outlook express.
Please can anyone assist?

You need to import the .dbx files to an Identity in Outlook Express.. and open them as e-mails or open them with an application such as the following.
