I have an AMD 5400+ @ 3ghz

I was looking to buy an AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz

How big of an upgrade would this be for counter strike source?

At stock speed, you would probably see something like a 10-20 fps gain. Of course if you overclock it you could see alot better. Did you plan on upgrading your motherboard too? Otherwise your going to have to see if your current mobo can run am3 cpus, you might need a bios update.

as long as your mobo supports it, the gain should be pretty noticeable.

when i upgraded, i went from an athlon 5200+ to a phenom ii 550, and it made a hell of a difference (as much as 30fps or more gain in some games)

CSS is pretty CPU dependant, so i would imagine a pretty big performance boost.

because the architecture is miles ahead. and the ammount of hertz realy doesnt matter much anymore.

the performance increase is pretty huge.
