I'm looking to pick up a 4850 for as cheap as possible sometime before Christmas, for a secondary system. Did ATI cut production now that the 5000 series is out? I see a sapphire card on newegg for $85, free shipping, after MIR. Should I expect the cards to get any cheaper? Or did they stop supply and some prices will stagnate or go up??

Would love to get one for $50 on a Black Friday sale or something, but don't want to risk the supply being gone and missing the chance at a dirt cheap card.

What's the price expectation on the 4000 series (particularly 4850) in the coming 2 months? Up, down, same?

Could go either way its very hard to say for sure, If the 5770's come out and people who have been waiting to see what its like first are unimpressed then they will get a "cheap" 4 series card instead which will push the price up. If the 5700's are good and they have lots of 4 series cards left then they will drop.
Its all very dependant on a number of things, the X1950pro was a very sort after card even after they stopped making them on mass and the price stayed high while the 3 series cards are a stupid price now compared to what they went for at launch.

I wouldn't expect $50, but maybe $80-85 before mail-in rebate. The average price for a 512MB version right now is around $100. So 20-25% off for Black Friday seems reasonable, anything more and it would be a suprise.

Unless ATi comes out with other 5000 cards in the price range of the 4800s right now, I think that the prices will remain stagnant for a while.

yeah, I'm thinking I want to wait and try and get a Black Friday deal. As long as they don't have a supply shortage that should be a good bet... my only concern would be a stop in production and so the prices of 4850s going up... but it sounds like that's not the case??

With the release of the 57xx cards next week - ATI are stopping production of the 48xx cards - price may go either way as the stock in the channel gets run down

well, when the 4xxx series hit the market, AMD didnt stop 3xxx series immediately, i mean, you can still find a couple 3870s on the Egg.

but prices have dropped on the 3870 as low as 70 dollars. im also counting on price reduction on the 4xxx series

back in the day, AMD released the AM2 socket series, which caused them to stop production on the X2 series. I had a socket 939 mobo with single core chip and was waiting to upgrade to a dual core s939 X2 chip. Well as I was waiting for the prices to drop, all of the sudden they started coming up on the X2 socket 939 chips!

But I'm guessing that was because of the s939 compatibility issue, which shouldn't affect gpus...
