Phoenix bios v 1 10 A32

I want to add RAM to my Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop with two 256 mbs. I has phoenix bios v 1.10 A32. Dell says that the bios needs to be updated on the website selling 512 Mb ram, which the site says is compatible with the service tag that represents my laptop. I tried to update the bios with the I5100A32 update, from Windows xp, but it did not take. Is my path to update the phoenix bios? If so how do I find the update, and instructions on how to perform the update?
