RAID 0 will increase the transfer rates of HDDs, but not do anything for the seek times. SSDs will blow them away on seek times.

Why not buy a 256 GB SSD and avoid the risks inherent in RAID 0, plus the possibility that the TRIM command is not effective for RAIDed SSDs? In any case, if your motherboard supports SATA III get an SSD with SATA III interface - SSD transfer rates are now well over 500 MB/sec, and SATA II limits to 300 MB/Sec.

If your motherboard does not support SATA III, go buy a new one!

I looked at your board and you seem to be in the same boat I was. Stuck with SATA 2 wishing for SATA 3. I tried two SATA 3 cards in my rig and they both were very flakey as the reviews state. 1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115072 and 2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124044

I found a good balance with the same two Corsair Nova drives in RAID 0 and 3 WD 300GB Velociraptors in RAID 5 (ICH10R South Bridge controller). I also have a JMicro controller which controlls 1 SATA, 1 IDE port, and 1 eSATA. I have it running my Optical drive.

I paid $199 for the Corsair pair and $223 for the 3 Velociraptors.
