Hi, I have a dell monitor that has a vga and a dvi connector in the back. Is it possible to leave the computer turned on hooked up into the dvi connector while the vga is hooked up to an external tv tuner? [so I can watch my vhs tapes] Does my monitor have some type of switching mechanism or do I need a separate device to do something like this?

Most don't. Check your monitors menu to see if you can switch between the inputs. I've used monitors before that allow this, but they all had a button on the front to select A or B input. Unless your monitor allows you to select DVI or VGA, it won't work.

The selection of input source MAY be dedicated buttons on the monitor case, or may be just a choice inside the monitor's menu system.

It may also be a single button that toggles back and forth between them (I see that on mine now.
