IDE HDD to External?

Hello & Weolcome to Tom's Hardware!

With it plugged in, boot to the splash screen and into the BIOS. On the intergrated peripheral page (or similar) see if this drive is recognized there.

Do you have any other drives connected to your computer other than the C drive, and this USB drive?

If not, then go to Disk Management, and in the lower graphical area, see if it is listed as Disk 1 there or a higher # if you have other drives connected.

Report what is listed on that row, in the DriveStatus area and VolumeStatus area. If the drive is not previously partitioned and formatted, you will need to do that to have it seen by the OS with a DriveLetter, and VolumeName.

Hopefully that will get you going

I know how to go into the bios but I am not exactly sure how to see if the drive is recognized or not. Could you please elaborate more?

Thanks for the help!

What is the motherboard make and model # that you are using?

Then go to Disk Management and give us the info in the lower graphical area, or better yet if you can capture a screenshot of that page to post, that'd be great. The removable drive should be listed there possibly as Disk 1 or Disk 2.
