'Hot Swap' if I'm not mistaken is a feature on some motherboards that enables the user to change hardware without powering down the machine.

Beware, I'm not certain.

Hotswap refers to the ability to remove and replace a part while the machine is still powered on, as in hotswap power supplies, RAM, harddisks etc. It most commonly references hotswappable harddrives.

The feature involves more than just the motherboard, as special connectors and enclosures are normally used to ensure proper connections.

It is POSSIBLE to 'hotswap' certain items while a machine is running including PCI cards, harddrives etc even if it is not specifically designed for this but it is dangerous to do and definitely not recommended.
