Modest gfx card?

So, I finally decided that I needed a new graphics card. Unfortunately this is the one thing in a PC which I know the least about. A friend I talked to said I should try this: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gts_250_us.html ...considering I do not have a very big budget.

It sounds amazing when compared to my old graphics card, which makes me realise I have no idea. I currently have 1GB RAM though, and I'm thinking about upping it to 2GB (I'm using XP).

What sort of games would that card run? Is there anything with a similar or lower price which would be a wiser choice?
