Gents:

After much consideration I ordered new kit. Running UBUNTU Linux. It's a solid "value" build for long.term multi-purpose ( 5-y ) use. Some UPSIDE possibilities. going for'ard.

AMD-965 + MSI( 790.G70 ) ( room & muscle for #_cruncher board )
BFG 9800gtx
Seagate 500GB <sata>
Liteon Bray/DVD <sata>
Antec 650w ( modest power demand )
2x2G Crucial ram 1333

Total cost ~ $880

Will replace AMD2600+ in full.tower case with classic heavyweight TOSHIBA keyboard. Expect to purchase new 24-28" monitor ( 1900x1200 ) ... Antec or Hanns ... please advise.

If Ubuntu is going to be your primary OS, is there even any need for a discrete graphics card? I wouldn't say ubuntu is the best OS for games and graphics. Getting a board that has an integrated card should save you a bit.

As for monitor choice, you might want to clarify a bit more. As far as I know, Antec doesn't make monitors. Hanns could be either Hanns-G commonly found on Newegg, or Hanns-Spree, a Best Buy brand with a somewhat seedy reputation.

Yes my mistake; I meant ASUS not antec ... The ASUS 25.5" and Hanns-G 28" both sell for about $300 and rate well.

Linux video progresses ... . Native Linux drivers are good, and NV supports the platform with something a bit better( and more troublesome). Sadly Linux aud/vid has remained a "poor relative" among techno-wealthy server geeks.

Both Asus and Hanns-G have very good reputations on Newegg, it's pretty safe to go with either brand. I purchased a 19" Hanns-G for my sister's build years back, and she's still using it so it hasn't failed or anything. Never went with an Asus monitor, but all of the other Asus stuff I've owned has been fine.
