It looks like Nvidia is going to sit this holiday season out instead of going head to head with Ati. I bet they will impliment some crazy price drops however and give enough headroom for the development of their supercomputer GTX300 cards next year.
Im surprised how quick Ati/AMD has sprung out their bread winning 5870, and their entry level 5770 in less than a month! I guess the red suits the coming of the Christmas holiday for Ati fans.
Will you guys end up buying on of these cards or Crossfire them? Or practice some Zen for the Green?
I won't be buying anything soon, not because i'm waiting for Nvidia, but because my current card performs adequately for my modest demands. I expect the prices to drop a bit in a month or so, but it will be 2010 before i buy a new GPU.
Hey the headline - Early X-Mas for Ati/AMD Fans! 5870,5850,5770 are on! - just for Ati fans is irrelevent.
They have brought out the cards which is better for both ati/nvidia. Where as nvidia used to charge xmas premium. $800 for 8800 ultra. Atleast those xmas nightmares are gone.
Well done Amd/Ati. Keep up the good price/product for all.

Why would it be irrelevant when these ATi cards are out for a reasonable price straight out from the factory. PPl will spend for products less than the $800 or so Nvidia used to charge for their 8800 Ultra back in 2006. So why not $300-400 for these NEW and improved Ati cards?
I bet the prices could possibly go down $10-20 by December as well and if Nvidia decides to release a card or at least specs for that card we will see the Ati prices go down for sure. By the time Nvidia comes out with their cards next year Ati will have 5890 and 5850x2 or even 5870x2 cards on their way for sure.
So I was figurativly saying that for people looking for the latest GPU technology out befire xmas, looks like we only have Ati cards out if they are looking for pound for pound or frame for price these Ati cards.
Im itching to get a new GPU! I was thinking about getting the 5870 but over here in the UK there doesnt seem to be alot choice available yet. Everywhere I look there are alot of pre-orders!
I might just sit it out and wait until after xmas or wait until Nvidia respond.
well i have the 5870 and i literally *** my pants when i played crysis on ultra-high details with AAx16.... it was my first graphics card (i have built many computers for other people but before now i have always had integrated graphics) and i have it crossfire with another 5870 and i dont know how to explain the feeling i get when i go into the crysis map editor and blow a nuke right on top of me at 38FPS (with only one 5870 dropping the nuke ten feet in front of you drops it to 10-15 FPS for five seconds or so.
I was won over by Eyefinity. I got my 5870, and am very happy with it. I'm spending my free time playing Batman, watching Hulu, and surfing the web on 3 monitors. NFS Shift in panoramic is gorgeous. Perhaps I'll grab a second 5870 next year when prices drop in half.

so you guys arent going to wait a little bit for the GTX300's? I assume that they will at least give Ati a run for their money.... I hope they release SPECs in december or Jan at the very least so we know whats comng up and how much to save/spend for...

No way not now. My 5870 will be on the way sooooooooon..
lol the GTX300 should be able to smoke the 5870 just because it will come out much after, but by then the 5870's will be prolly 300$ with the GTX300 at probably 600 or more, and two 5870's in crossfire will most likely be able to beat the GTX300

Man Im waiting for the GTX380, ill still buy it for $400 if it came out at that price. Im fine with my old 9800GTX+....
Nvidia drivers will be fully optimized for Windows7 and DX11 by early spring next year.
Maybe we will get USB3.0 as well and cheap SSDs

Looks like you will have to wait till next Xmas and dont even expect the price to be close to that.
Fermi has 40% more transitor and 60% more die space - So it should be as usual nvidias High end launch price (between $600 to $800)
Great another Ati Radeon card coming out, possibly by December..... Nvidia has taken so many hits that they must be saving their cards for something big.... If sources are correct, Ati has a X2 of one of their cars that just came out less than two months ago. If Nvidia can make smaller, lighter, energy efficient, DX11, and cooler GPUs with the power to at least match the 5870 then it would have been worth the wait.
I was wrong about prices dropping a month or 2 after release. Due to the low production of the cards and high demand the ATI 5000 series have gone up over $20 in the first month after release. They may not drop in price until and unless Nvidia can give them any kind of competition or they saturate the market.

Yeah demand is high for these Ati cards and the supply is short, where I am, the 5870 is around $420! Thats actually not too bad but the brand is Sapphire or Powercolor...

I've been trying to buy a 5870 for 2 months. They are sold out in seconds on the egg whenever I get an auto-notify, and other vendors the same story. I've had a pre-order open at amazon for 5 weeks and no joy. I'm staring at an ebay auction where this card is at $551.00, and wondering if I should just eat that markup. Retail has nothing.

By the end of the month, things should start to ease, keep trying, wont be too much longer
For those of you that are talking about Ati cards and waiting for stocks of 5850's and 5870's.... Well now you can spend almost twice as much and get 2 5850's in one card with the 5970..... forget about crossfire as its better to buy one card and eventually get a second later on for maximum best results for at least 2-3years to come.....
Just order this as stocking levels are still good to go in newegg..... $600 is worth the investment and Nvidia is nowhere to be seen at this point.....
