How to download my laptop with a thumdrive

It is time for me to transfer all my data from my 8 year old Del lap top to my new gateway lap top. I have a Micro Center 4GB to do this with. Is this the way to do this and if so what are the steps to do so?

When you say "all my data" are you referring to personal files only (documents pictures etc) ?

If so, just copy or drag and drop the folders onto the Flash Drive, then plug the drive into the new unit. No need to copy them to the new Hard drive unless you want to.
