Hi,
im currently configuring a desktop and am unsure as to which card I should purchase. Using an i7-960 processor and 6gigs of 1600mhz ram, which card would you think would be better value/performance. I know the 5870 is compatible with Direct x11 but seeing as there arent even any directx11 demos available is there any point in investing in a card that i wont see the full benefits of for a while yet. So, ATI Radeon HD 5870 or 1.8gig GTX 295? What would you buy and why?

any suggestions are welcome,

thanks

Get the 5870 after it drops in price (hopefully soon).

It performs similar to a 4870x2, and is almost as good as a GTX295 without scaling issues.

GTX295 is overpriced at the moment. Don't get the GTX295 unless they lower the price of it significantly ($100 or more)

5870. Performance is similar but the 295 is a waste. It's not even close enough to debate it.

The HD5870 is slightly worse than GTX295 at the moment, but its power consumption is 680-500=180W less than the GTX295 which will save you a lot of power and so money. In addition, the performance difference between them should be minimal when HD5xxx driver matures and DX11 released.

+1 HD5870

I'd say 5870 as well, because even with all things equal, with the 5870 you don't have to mess with Crossfire/SLI, or you can add a second later if you want to dual card.

Also, the HD5870 is cheaper in price too!

Yep, and once you add all that good stuff in (price, DX11, etc.) it becomes a real landslide in my opinion. The only thing really lacking is PhysX, though I'd consider that minor as best.
