I have all the components for my system shipping. I got the Vista 64 bit with windows 7 upgrade.
Is it possible to install some version of windows 7 out there, and then just activate it once October 22nd rolls around? I tried searching on this and couldn't find anything. I'd rather not install Vista now, then upgrade in 3 weeks, nor would I like to install Vista now, and then do a fresh install in 3 weeks.
Also, I am getting an SSD hard drive as my OS drive. I'm guessing you can defrag these just like normal HDs, and is still worth it once in a while? Also, is it best to just keep the OS, program files, and normal user data there, then use the 2TB data drive for everything else? Or should I offload everything not OS and program files?
Thanks for any input! I'll post pics of my system when I put it together, I'm getting:

You're going to be sad when your shipment arrives and you realize you picked a motherboard that isn't compatible with your CPU or cooler. Your cooler and the i7 920 CPU use the LGA 1366 socket. Neither are compatible with your LGA 1156 motherboard. The RAM you picked is also designed for the triple channel RAM controller on the LGA 1366 chips.
Your idea about installing the Windows 7 RC and just changing the activation key on October 22 won't work either. Like zipzoomflyhigh said, you'll have to install Vista and then either do an upgrade or fresh install of Windows 7.
Guess I'll just have to keep good track of what I install in the next couple of weeks before I blow it all away upgrading... I heard you can do a fresh install from my upgrade, I don't have to install it on top of Vista? Was that wrong?
Thanks for the response, and a brown stain in my pants!
