I am putting together a Veterans Military Museum and want to build a lited display of events using led lamps to signify key battles as they occured in sequence. What can I use as a controller? I want to interface audio also, is that possible?

You would need what is called a microcontroller. You will need to software code and hardware build it from scratch if your ambitious. You can buy premade i/o modules and controllers from Opto 22 or Pepper & fuchs for example but you will still need to compile the software to run the i/o modules correctly to have them do what you want. The respective companies sell software packages for their modules.
